Almost always the feeling is of being in front of someone who sees a mirage, something so desired to the point of not considering it true.
But it's not a mirage, it's the reality: at H-Farm we've been using it for years and the results can be seen. And we are not alone, other companies have started with satisfaction to use WETHOD.
But what blocks others? Does everyone who sees it appreciate it but in the end can't jump in?
I have thought a lot about it because it represents the main challenge we face: to find ways to make the activation of the service as less problematic as possible and to minimize doubts and anxieties that always arise when a path of change begins.
The first answer I gave myself was that WETHOD is not and cannot be a tool for everyone. Like all things that try to answer a complex problem, it does so in a non-trivial way. This implies that some hires must be made their own to marry the instrument as well.
Because those who marry the tool usually appreciate the underlying management philosophy and are attracted to it to the point of not being frightened by what is required to adopt it.
So it takes courage: courage to face choices and not let things go by inertia even if they don't satisfy us. On the other hand, I am always very struck by how some, for fear of changing things that don't work anyway, choose not to choose.
Actually, from direct experience, I can say that Activating a system like this requires very little. Much less than one might normally think. We need conviction and desire to try and conviction that it can work and give excellent results right away.
Based on what I have understood from direct experience and recording good practices by others, there are some key points and some tricks that make the adoption much more likely to be successful:
- import all existing data from ongoing projects (to simplify, there is also an assisted procedure in the settings). One of the main advantages of WETHOD is to give a map of the health of the projects and this is obviously all the more useful the more complete the list of projects is.
- Expect the widest possible perimeter: WETHOD is a system and works best if it includes the entire organization and all projects. In fact, for the planning process to be effective, it is essential that there are all the people and all the possible activities (project and not). Only in this way is the picture of who does what is always realistic and no integration with parallel sources is necessary.
- Activate planning: it is essential that all project managers understand the importance of planning. The most effective way is to make it clear that those who are faster always have more options. All this works only if the plan is full enough to push everyone to move so as not to run out of choices. All initiatives that push in this direction are useful for the purpose. For example, I usually always have one or two internal projects (with us there are always a lot of ideas and little time to carry them out) that I use to plan the people I see as free. When I see the plan a little empty I get busy and magically everyone worries about not seeing the key people walk away from the projects.
- If the schedule is activated, everything else goes smoothly. To plan, you need an approved budget, and budgeting is only possible for pipeline projects. The trick here is not to allow parallel channels: I never review a budget if it's not on WETHOD. No excel, no prospectus, no power point.
- Be convinced and determined. In the end, you have to understand why you want to do it and that you believe it. Only then will there be no boycotts. On the other hand, it is clear that if you approach it as a weak attempt in which you throw away the starting point and hope that it will start on its own, you waste time and hope. No change is easy but I assure you that if you are convinced this thing will be up to speed in less than a week. If it doesn't work, it's only because you haven't understood it or you don't believe it enough. And then you probably don't deserve it.
